There is no big-water harbour in town, so almost every London boat owner keeps their vessel on a trailer in the driveway, in a storage yard off Wonderland or Highbury, or under a cover beside the garage — and tows it to Port Stanley, Grand Bend, or Bayfield when it is time to launch. That is exactly the situation a mobile detailer is built for. We come to wherever the boat sits, with our own power, water, and equipment, and it never has to move.
City storage brings its own problems. A boat parked under trees all spring collects sap, pollen, and bird droppings that etch into gel coat if they sit. Driveway washing with hard municipal water leaves mineral spots that a garden hose will never rinse off. And a cover that traps moisture over winter is how vinyl seats come out mildewed in May. What London storage does to a hull
London has no navigable big water. The Thames runs through the middle of the city but nobody keeps a cruiser on it, so a London boat lives on a trailer and travels to the lake. That single fact decides what goes wrong with it. The damage a London boat accumulates is storage damage and road damage, not water damage, and the two look nothing alike.
The city's tree cover is the specific problem. London is unusually well treed for its size, and a boat parked under a mature maple or a row of pines through spring collects sap and pollen continuously. Sap is not dirt sitting on the surface, it is a resin that cures hard in sunlight and etches into gel coat, and by the time it has been through a few hot afternoons a pressure washer will not shift it. Bird droppings do the same thing faster, because they are acidic.
Municipal water is the second one. Washing a boat in a driveway with a hose and letting it dry in the sun leaves the dissolved minerals behind as spots, and those spots are a mineral deposit rather than a smear. They will not rinse off later. It is the reason a boat can be washed regularly and still look progressively worse each season, which surprises people who have been doing everything they thought was right.
